The first thing that comes to everyone’s mind while talking about Christ University is the strict dress code, especially for the girls. Confined to wearing only salwar-kameez, one would think that Christites wouldn’t have much variety in dressing, but then you are mistaken.

Despite the various constraints, the students still manage to be their trendiest best and they attribute that to their  ‘thinking outside the box’. From teaming up the tunics with leggings and jeans, to dressing up in the traditional way in salwar and churidar, the girls have found ways to look trendy within the ‘rules of the handbook’.

Currently, the most popular style on campus amongst the first year girls, is the front-buttoned tops. What makes these tops different from the usual kurtis are that they give a very formal look, as desired by many of the students.

Says Samiksha, a first year student, “The buttons in front and the collars are very important and they are a good fusion of traditional and western wear. Plus, they can be worn even after college hours for going to other places.”

Another great advantage of the tops is the length, which makes them look like kurtis, and then there is also the comfort factor. “These tops don’t give too much of a problem as they are easy to maintain and easy to slip on in the mornings,” adds Vidya, another first year student. With the weather being chilly during the day, Naalia says that many even go in for a knitted top with buttons in front. “These long-knitted tops look like kurtis and they manage to keep one warm in the weather,” she adds. The price factor does not matter much for many of the students as it is the quality that they look for. “Generally, they are not highly priced and are easily available on Commercial Street,” adds Samiksha.

Girls opt for bright and happy colours not only while buying the clothes but also the footwear. Ranging from purple, red, yellow and white, the strappy sandals are the first choice of girls on campus. The sandals, they say are a great accessory, to team up with their salwars, “Canvas shoes and salwars don’t go together at all. That’s why these strappy slip-ons make a great pick,” says Prerna.

Ask them what’s totally off the campus’ fashion radar, “Ballet shoes are a complete no-no in this rainy season. We have gone for strappy footwear with a good grip,” says Shriya, another first year student.

Says Bhavya, “When it rains, one does tend to trip or the sandals break, so the grip is very important while buying the footwear. But if you are having a really bad day and your footwear breaks, there’s always the cobbler who is round the corner waiting with his range of sandals.”
