GM to recall 243,403 vehicles due to seat belt problem

The US car maker would recall 2009-10 models of the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook to "inspect second-row safety belts for damage".

In a statement, GM said that in some cases, this problems could make occupant think the belt is properly latched when it is not so.

"There are 243,403 vehicles involved in the recall, the majority in the US with several thousand exported vehicles in Canada, Mexico, China and Saudi Arabia and small populations in other countries," GM noted.

So far, there has been no case of second-row safety belts failing to perform properly in a crash.

Sometimes, the buckle of the seat belt may not latch or unlatch and may appear to be jammed. In rare cases, the buckle may appear to be latched when the latch mechanism is not fully engaged, according to the company.

"Because of the potential for a false-latch condition, we want customers to return their vehicles to have the recall repair performed as soon as possible," GM's Executive Director of Safety Jeff Boyer said.
