K'taka man to head military training

Last Updated 17 August 2010, 17:17 IST

Gen Halgali, who belongs to Mudhol in Bagalkot district, has been the commander of Jalandhar-based 11 Corps (Vajra Corps) since July 24, 2009. For close to two years, Gen Halgali commanded one of India’s elite strike corps. The three-star general was named one of the accused in the infamous Sukhna land scam controversy for his alleged failure to properly direct his senior officers in the eastern command.

A Court of Inquiry, headed by Army Chief Gen V K Singh who was then chief of the eastern command in Fort Williams in Kolkata, recommended administrative action against Gen Halgali. All actions under Army Act of 1950 and Army Rules of 1954 were taken before his appointment as the DG of military training, said an officer.

Gen Halgali has handed over the command of Vajra Corps to Lt Gen Munish Sibal.
