Dasara: New attractions among citizens suggestions

Last Updated 21 August 2010, 17:59 IST

A meeting was convened here under the chairmanship of Urban Development, Law and Parliamentary Affairs and District-In-Charge Minister S Sureshkumar here on Saturday. Litterateurs, social workers and politicians participated in the meeting.

Some opined that nowadays, Dasara means only tableaux, procession and cultural troupes. The jamboo savari would be more attractive if weapons used by maharajas and silver chariot were added to the procession. Some wanted only eligible persons to be in various sub-committees. Last year, a few who had been appointed had no knowledge of the committees they were heading. At least this time, people who have thorough knowledge of their committees concerned should be appointed. The commentary on Vijaya Dashami day is not at all understood by people besides it being confusing. It should be easily understood by everybody, they demanded.

They said the Dasara Exhibition has lost its sheen over the years and it has become a place to eat and enjoy. It should reflect achievements made in the field of agriculture, industry, sports and Information Technology. Besides, opportunity should be given to grow vegetables in Flower Exhibition at Curzon Park. In Yuva Dasara, more time is reserved for national level artists thus denying opportunity for local artists. Need of the hour was to maintain its quality. It should also focus the rich cultural heritage of Dasara, they added.

Nodal officers
They wanted the minister to appoint a nodal officer to monitor sub-committees. Works taken up during Dasara would be of substandard quality and necessary instruction should be given to maintain quality. The advertisements released by the government on Dasara should be in Kannada.
When a senior citizen wanted Sureshkumar to give priority for wrestling on par with other sports, the minister cracked a joke that they had been fighting in Vidhana Soudha more than professional wrestlers.

Gajapayana
The Dasara elephants would commence its journey from Veeranahosahalli in Hunsur taluk on September 3 to participate in this year’s festival. In total 12 elephants would participate but arrive in Mysore in two batches. They will reach Aranya Bhavan on the same day. They would be formally welcomed in front of Mysore Palace on September 6. All arrangements would be made for mahouts and their family members.

Those who participated in the meeting include DC Harsh Gupta, ADC Betsurmutt, Music Varsity VC Hanumannanayak Dore, Rajashekar Kadamba, Girish Koushik, M B Vishwanath, Thayur Vittalmurthy and others.
