Counselling was scheduled for candidates belonging to NSS, NCC, Sports, Cultural Activities, Defence, Kashmiri migrants, Foreign Nationals, Physically Handicapped, Other Universities in Karnataka, Outside Karnataka, and Transgenders under the Supernumerary quota.

Disproportionate
Although just over 600 seats were available under the supernumerary quota, many candidates sought admission for a few seats ignoring the merit list announced last week. According to a BU official, many non-supernumerary quota candidates also turned up seeking admission.

“Many candidates who had not applied under the supernumerary quota came out for admission saying they belonged to the relevant categories. While several of them had not even applied under the said quota, scores of others had not submitted the required documents,” the official said seeking anonymity.

In a few instances, the toppers failed to turn up on time forcing the officials to give the seat to the next candidates. “Things came to a head when the toppers appeared and demanded admission. This put us in a fix. Although we had clearly instructed them to come half an hour early, their late arrival created problems for us,” the official added.

Misinformed
According to sources, the confusion was created because many candidates did not check the merit list announced on September 16. “Hence, everyone sought admission,” they said.

Although counselling at the basement of the Jnana Jyothi Auditorium began only at 11 am, a good one-and-a-half hours behind schedule, many students still arrived later. Counselling inside the auditorium, however, began at 9:30 am as scheduled.

The admission process comprised three stages. At the first stage, students’ application forms were checked at Counter No 2 followed by the verification of documents. At the last leg, students were given on-the-spot admission if everything was in order.
Barring the transgender quota, all other categories had candidates. According to an official, many students, including foreign nationals, were given admission. The process went till late evening.

From Tuesday, counselling will be held for various courses under the faculty of arts (including languages).
