Bhanupriya (19), a first semester student of the BMS College of Engineering on the Bull Temple Road and resident of Shantinagar, was on her way to the college when her two-wheeler skidded on the polythene bags, the City Market traffic police said.

Bhanupriya fell down and was run over by a private bus. The girl was dragged for a distance before the driver could apply brakes and died instantaneously, the police said.

Only daughter

A policeman on the spot told Deccan Herald that Bhanupriya, instead of wearing her helmet, had hung it on the handle of the scooter. “If only she had worn the helmet, she would have been alive,” said the policeman.

"Bhanupriya was the only daughter of Badrinarayan and Kokila who work with BHEL,” a relative said. It was a fortnight since she had begun going to the college and was happy that she got the Electronics and Communication branch which was her preference.

She had dropped her father near Poornima theatre at Subbaiah Circle a few minutes before the accident, said an inconsolable relative.

The bus driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. The traffic police have registered a hit-and-run case.  Shocked by Bhanupriya’s tragic death, one of her relatives collapsed and died, it is learnt.
