Mahatma Gandhi permitted Baikunth Bhai Mehta to contest the 1935 elections to the Maharashtra assembly but stipulated that Mehta must do so without spending any money on the campaign.
Mehta followed the directive in letter and spirit and sent postcards to his electors, appealing for their votes. Belying sceptics, Mehta won his seat to become Finance Minister of the state.
