<p>A number of <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/bollywood-news">Bollywood</a> movies have drawn inspiring stories from the Kargil War, a crucial episode in modern Indian history. However there is another unique connection between Bollywood and the <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/kargil-war">Kargil War</a>, Nana Patekar, the three-time National Award winning Bollywood star, put his career on hold to help the Indian Army during the war. </p><p>Patekar recently appeared on <em>Kaun Banega Crorepati 16</em>, where he shared his inspiring story of serving the nation during the war.</p><p>Nana Patekar lived and trained for three years in the early 1990s with the Maratha Light Infantry of the Army while writing his film, <em>Prahaar</em>. But when the Kargil War broke out, he reached out to the senior officers from the division and requested that he be allowed to join the men on the frontlines, but he was denied permission. </p><p>This did not deter Patekar from pursing his desire to serve in the Army. Patekar recalled. "I told him that even though the training for commission is six months, I trained for three years. He was surprised and asked me about it. After learning of my experience with the Maratha Light Infantry, he asked me, ‘When do you want to go?’'' Patekar said on <em>KBC</em>. </p><p>In August 1999, Nana spent over a fortnight on the frontlines near the Line of Control (LOC). During his time there, he assisted soldiers and worked in the hospital at the base for several days. He also recalled being a part of the Quick Response Team (QTR). </p><p>I was 76 kg when I reached Srinagar. By the time I came back, I was 56 kg," he said speaking about the harsh conditions on the frontlines. </p><p>After he returned from Kargil, he resumed his film career and starred in some of the most successful and critically-acclaimed Indian films. </p>
