The Nivar cyclone has claimed eight lives in Andhra Pradesh while causing widespread damage to crops, roads and other properties in Chittoor, Nellore and Kadapa districts.

On Saturday, Chief Minister Jaganmohan Reddy undertook an aerial survey of the cyclone-devastated areas and reviewed the situation with officials.

Reddy announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of eight deceased persons (six in Chittoor and two in Kadapa districts) who died due to the heavy rains triggered by the cyclone.

The CM directed officials to restore power supply as early as possible in the affected areas. He said that crop loss enumeration should take place on a war footing and compensation should be paid by December end.

The cyclonic rains effect was evident in Kurnool district too, where the Tungabhadra pushkarams are taking place. Rains have caused damage to the standing crops and harvested produce in areas as far as Visakhapatnam.

The chief minister had instructed that people in relief camps should be handed Rs 500 each while returning home. Services of village volunteers should be utilized to hand over the amount if they have already left. Over 10,000 people were housed in about 150 shelters, CMO officials said.
