<p>Hyderabad: The officers of DRI, Hyderabad Zonal Unit apprehended two persons at Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh who were involved in trading of illegally possessed Dead black and soft corals and Trapezium Horse Conches. Black Corals and Soft Corals are listed in Schedule-I of Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 and are thereby provided the highest degree of protection, whereas Trapezium Horse Conch is listed in Schedule-II of Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.</p><p>Around 9.812 Kgs of dead Black Corals that carry scientific name of Antipatharia, 0.286 Kgs of dead Soft Corals whose scientific name goes with Alcyonacea and six Trapezium Horse Conches possessing the scientific name as Pleuroploca Trapezium were recovered from the possession of the said two persons.</p>.DRI seizes 123 kg narcotic drug Methamphetamine in H1 FY25; maximum cases in Assam, Mizoram.<p>Further, it was revealed that the supplier of the above wildlife articles is based out of Ongole, a coastal town in Andhra Pradesh. In a swift follow-up action a team of officers of Vijayawada Regional Unit of DRI Hyderabad Zonal Unit have apprehended the supplier and seized dead black corals weighing 6.64 kgs on December 31.</p><p>Soft and black corals are marine invertebrates, which are rare and endangered animals that are vital part of coral reef systems. Removing them would destroy the entire habitat in the region as they provide shelter to other creatures and also part of the food chain for various species of fish.</p><p>There are no medical reasons or problem-solving benefits associated with them. These dead soft corals locally called as 'mahendrajaal' and dead black corals called as 'indrajaal' are primarily sold for framing and display in homes to attract good luck.</p><p>DRI handed over the three persons who were apprehended along with the seized wildlife articles and the vehicles to the Forest Department Officials of Andhra Pradesh for further investigation under the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.</p>
