The written statement in the main suit filed by Maharashtra demanding transfer of Belgaum from Karnataka to Maharashtra was filed in November 2006.
"There is no change in the position of the Central government and that the suit may be disposed of 'in accordance with the proved facts of the case and in accordance with the law'," the sources said.
In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, the Centre said that Belgaum district in Karnataka cannot be ceded to Maharashtra merely because it has a large chunk of Marathi- speaking people.
The Centre pointed out that reorganisation of states was carried out in 1956 and 1960 on the basis of various criteria and language was only one of them and not the sole factor.
It urged the court to dismiss Maharashtra's claim on the ground that there was no justification for the demand.
In March 2004, Maharashtra challenged in the Supreme Court the validity of certain provisions of the States Reorganisation Act and sought a direction from the Supreme Court for inclusion of certain Marathi speaking areas in Karnataka.
The Central government filed a written statement in the Supreme Court opposing the prayers in the Maharashtra's plaint. "It is stated that the suit may be disposed of by this honourable court in accordance with the proved facts of the case and in accordance with the law," sources said.
In February 2009, Maharashtra filed an interim application in the main suit reiterating its contentions in the earlier main suit and sought to urge additional grounds and reasons in support of the prayers.
