As the farmers' protests enter its 12th day, the Modi government has unleashed a campaign to highlight the benefits of the new farm sector laws, insisting that the MSP regime would remain untouched. The Centre has proposed another meeting on December 9 and has asked for time from unions to present a concrete proposal after further consultations. Led by two-time Asian Games gold-winning former wrestler Kartar Singh, a few sportspersons from Punjab marched towards the Rashtrapati Bhavan to return "35 national sports awards" in a show of solidarity with farmers agitating against new agriculture laws but were stopped midway by the police. Addressing a press conference here, Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy described the decision as 'unfortunate' and alleged that the TRS government was trying to close shops and halt transport.

K'taka Congress to launch letter drive against farm and labour laws

Haryana health department to hold medical camps for protesting farmers: Anil Vij

Haryana's health department will organise medical camps for farmers protesting at various border points of Delhi against the three Central agri laws, state Health Minister Anil Vij said on Sunday.

Doctors will be present in these camps, he said, adding the Red Cross Society is providing services at the protest sites.

Health department officials from Sonipat said they have distributed medicines and masks among the farmers protesting at its inter-state borders with Delhi.

Ambulances and mobile toilet facilities have been stationed at various points and sanitisation work is being carried out regularly, they said.

Shiv Sena backs 'Bharat Bandh' called by farmers on Dec 8

The ruling Shiv Sena in Maharashtra on Sunday extended its support to the 'Bharat Bandh' called on December 8 by farmer unions which have been protesting on Delhi's borders for 11 days demanding repeal of the Centre's new agri-marketing laws.

"Shiv Sena president and CM Uddhav Thackeray is against the Central laws which are anti-farmer and anti-labour. We support the Bharat bandh," Rajya Sabha MP Anil Desai told PTI on Sunday night.

Earlier in the day, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Prem Singh Chandumajra met CM Thackeray in Mumbai. He told reporters that Thackeray supported the Akali Dal's stand on the farmers' protest.

Chandumajra said Thackeray agreed with his party on the issue of the Centre's alleged interference into the "rights of state governments" in fields like education, agriculture and law and order.

DMK-led bloc extends support to Dec 8 Bharat bandh called for by farmers

The DMK-led opposition bloc in Tamil Nadu on Sunday extended support to the December 8 'Bharat bandh' called for by farmers agitating against the Centre's farm laws, saying their demand for the repealing of the three legilsations was "totally justified."

The M K Stalin-led grouping appealed to farmers' unions, traders' bodies, government employees' associations, labour unions and others in the state to extend "grand support" to the bandh and make it a success on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, actor Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) also extended support to the protest by farmers, who have been agitating for nearly 10 days outside Delhi border against the Centre's contentious laws.

In a statement, Stalin, TNCC chief KS Alagiri, MDMK founder Vaiko and Left leaders, among other DMK allies, said the ongoing protest outside Delhi by farmers was growing every day and drawing global attention.

Diljit asks farmers to be patient, hold peaceful protests; requests govt to accept their demands

Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh on Saturday joined the farmers protests at Delhi's Singhu border and asked the demonstrators to be patient and peaceful in their agitation and requested the government to accept their demands.

"You have created history once again," he told the protestors.

Days after engaging in a bitter Twitter fight with actor Kangana Ranaut over the farmers agitation, Dosanjh went to the protest site and initially sat among the crowd and listened to the speeches by other leaders.

The 36-year-old actor then took the stage and started his address in Punjabi.

"I am not here to talk but only listen. I compliment all of you. You have created history once again. I used to listen to stories that Punjabis are full of energy but I'm witnessing it for the first time," Dosanjh said.

To the agitating farmers, his message was: be patient and peaceful in your protests.

"This is the only way we can win this fight. Stories of these days will definitely be told in future," he said, while thanking the people who joined the protest from Haryana.

Adityanath directs officials to hold dialogue with farmer unions over strike

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials on Saturday to maintain vigil in view of the farmers' agitation and also hold dialogue with their representatives, according to an official statement.

Adityanath has asked the officials to hold a dialogue with representatives of farmer unions in all the districts of the state on the issue of the scheduled nationwide strike on Tuesday, as well as other programmes. He directed the commissioners, district magistrates, police chiefs to take all necessary precautions, the release said.

The chief minister said the state government was working in the interest of farmers and payments as per the minimum support price were being made to them, adding that availability of seeds, fertilisers and irrigation facilities were also being ensured.

Farmer kills self in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district

A 45-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in a village in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district, officials said on Saturday.

Family members of the deceased Dhaniram Markam said he was worried over how he would sell paddy crops cultivated on his more than six acres of land after learning that the maximum portion of the farm acreage under paddy production was written off in the government record for the procurement.

Officials said Markam was found hanging from a tree near his farm in Marangpuri village under Baderajpur development block on December 2.

"As per preliminary information, Markam had sown paddy on his 2.731 hectare (6.70 acre) of land and was eligible to sell around 100 quintal of paddy at the minimum support price (MSP) in the cooperative society," Kondagaon Collector Pushpendra Kumar Meena told PTI on Saturday.

Markam was found hanging from a tree near his farm in Marangpuri village under Baderajpur development block on December 2, they said.

Doctor brothers from Haryana set up free medical camp at Singhu border

Two brothers who are doctors and belong to a farming family of Haryana's Sirsa district are providing free medical care to the agitating farmers who are up in arms against the Centre's three farm laws.

A medical camp has been set up at the Singhu border by Sukhwinder Singh Brar and Ramanjit Singh Brar with the help of their doctor friends.

Both the brothers are private practitioners at Chandigarh.

"Everyday, we are giving medical care to almost 1,500 people coming up with different complaints," Sukhwinder said over the phone.

At the camp, they have kept a range of medicines in the boot space of two cars.

"We have medicines which can take care of several health-related issues," he said.

"Most of people are coming with complaints of hypertension, joint pain among elderly ones, diarrhoea, constipation etc," said Sukhwinder.

"Some elderly people who have run out of their medicines are also approaching us," he further said.

A team of 10-15 people including paramedic staff are working at this camp to provide medical care, he said.

Meeting likely to provide resolution on deadlock over farm laws

As the farmers' agitation enters the crucial phase, the government is reportedly agreeing to make amendments to the three new farm laws, however, farmers demand complete repeal of the laws.

Earlier, the farm unions had deliberated on the Centre's offer of eight amendments to the new farm laws and relaxation on the punishment for stubble burning. But the leaders stuck to their original demand.

If the ongoing fifth round of the Centre-farmer talks end without concrete resolution, the farmers have threatened for a nationwide bandh on December 8.

BJP selling farmers' rights to corporate houses through farm laws: TMC

The Trinamool Congress on Friday expressed its ire against the "draconian" farm bills, which it alleged were passed without consultation with stakeholders, and accused the BJP of selling farmers' rights to corporate houses.

A TMC delegation will soon meet the agitating farmers in Haryana, party sources said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while referring to her 26-day hunger strike against "forcible" land acquisition in Singur in 2006, expressed her solidarity with the farmers protesting the new farm laws.

The TMC supremo was then an opposition leader during the Left Front rule in the state.

Nashik: Farmers' organisations protest against new farm laws

Several farmers' organisations on Thursday held a protest in Nashik city of Maharashtra against the new farm laws brought by the Centre.

The organisations, including Shetkari Samanvay Samiti, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, Prahar, Janshakti, Chhava and Krantiveer, held demonstrations at the district collectorate in Nashik to express their solidarity with the farmers agitating in New Delhi.

They demanded that these farm laws should be rolled back immediately and warned of intensifying their agitation.

Farmers' protests: Govt says open to address key concerns; hopes for resolution in next meeting

The government is open to considering ways to strengthen mandis, create a level-playing field with proposed private markets, and freedom to approach higher courts for dispute resolutions in a bid to address the concern raised by protesting farmers' groups, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said on Thursday while asserting that procurement at MSP will continue.

Addressing media after the marathon meeting that lasted for almost eight hours, the minister said there is no threat to farmers' land from corporates and the government is ready to make it clearer, if needed.

Tomar, who led the government side at the fourth round of talks at Vigyan Bhawan, said the next meeting will take place on Saturday at 2 pm which he hoped would take the matter to a decisive stage and towards a final resolution.

He also appealed to the farmer bodies to end their protest, keeping in mind the cold weather.

Provide for jail term for people buying crops below MSP: BKU chief Naresh Tikait

Bharatiya Kisan Union national president Naresh Tikait on Thursday demanded a provision for jail terms for corporates and businessmen seeking to purchase farmers' produce at a price below the MSP.

Tikait raised he demand while addressing farmers sitting for the last four days at UP Gate on Delhi-Meerut highway's Delhi-Ghaziabad border, where they also had a few skirmishes with police on blocking the traffic

The BKP chief demanded a statutory provision for a jail term for people buying farmers’ produce below the MSP saying there would be no compromise on the issue of minimum support price.

“The government must give an assurance in writing that any business house or merchant who will purchase the agriculture produce below the MSP would be jailed,” said Tikait, addressing the farmers’ Mahapanchayat at the UP Gate.

Bundelkhand farmers threaten to step up stir

The Bundelkhand Kisan Union on Thursday supported farmers' demand for convening a special session of Parliament to repeal the Centre's three farm laws and warned the government of intensifying their stir.

“The three laws passed by the Union government are anti-farmers. They will not help farmers in any way and will only force them to commit suicide," said BKU national president Vimal Kumar. “The government should immediately convene a special session of the Parliament and withdraw all the three controversial laws and set up a “Krishi Ayog” consisting only of agriculture scientists and farmers,” Sharma said.

‘Delhi Chalo’: Govt should stop shaming this movement, says Bhim Army Chief

On December 03, Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad met protesting farmers at Delhi-Haryana Border. Farmers are present at the Singhu Border as the ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest entered the 8th day.

Chandra Shekhar said, "If the government becomes dictator then people should come out on the streets. The government should stop shaming this movement. We are here to support our farmers and will stand by them till the end.”

Farmers who commit suicide are cowards, says Karnataka Minister

Karnataka Agriculture Minister B C Patil on Thursday said the farmers who commit suicide are cowards.

"The farmers who commit suicide are cowards. Only a coward who can't take care of his wife and children commits suicide. When we have fallen (in the water), we have to swim and win," Patil said addressing farmers at Ponnampet in Kodagu district of Karnataka.

The Minister was explaining to bamboo growers of Ponnampet how profitable the agriculture business is, but some cowards do not realise that and commit suicide.

To buttress his point, Patil cited an example of a woman who was wearing gold bangles. "When I enquired with her how her hands were full of gold bangles, You know what she said? She said, "This mother earth has given me for my 35 years of toil." "Doesn't this please you all after listening to this?" Patil told the gathering.

He said when a woman who had depended herself entirely on agriculture and achieved big why other farmers cannot do it. Reacting to this, Congress Karnataka unit spokesperson V S Ugrappa condemned the Minister's statement, saying he has shown disrespect to the farming community.

Thousands of farmers from neighbouring states, mainly Punjab, have settled in and around the national capital as part of their 'Delhi Chalo' protest against the three new agricultural reforms which have been dubbed as "black laws" by the protesting farmers.

Agriculture Minister hopes for ‘positive outcome’ as he meets farm leaders

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar hoped that the crucial meeting with the farm leaders on December 3 will lead to “positive outcome”.

Tomar left from his residence to meet the farmer leaders. Meanwhile, 40 farmer leaders arrived at Vigyan Bhawan. “We are hopeful that the talks will be productive. If our demands are not met then the farmers will take part in the Republic Day parade held in Delhi,” said farmer leader Rakesh Tikait.

Modi-led government believes that the farm laws are in the interest of farmers. However, the farmer unions had rejected the government's new reforms, as they fear that the new reforms will leave them at the mercy of big corporates.

No outside person allowed to interfere in India's internal issues, says farmer leader

No outside person is allowed to interfere in India's internal matters, one of the agitating farmer leaders said about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's support to protest against the Centre's farm laws.

At a press conference on Singhu border near Delhi, Madhya Pradesh-based farmer leader Shiv Kumar Kakkaji said the agitation would continue till the government withdrew all three farm laws.

"No outside person is allowed to interfere in India's internal issues," he said when asked by Trudeau's support to the farmers protest.

The aim of holding a dialogue is to find a solution: Som Prakash, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry on the fourth round of talks between the Centre and farmers.
