In final days of Monsoon session, govt aims to pass key bills amid oppn protest

New Delhi: With just six days left for the Monsoon Session, the government wants to carry out key business and not allow the Opposition to continue its stir over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

According to government sources, the Centre aims to pass The National Sports Governance Bill 2025 and the Indian Ports Bill 2025, as well as discussions on the problem of Naxalism and importance of Space research.

The Opposition, however, wants to protest SIR on Monday as well.

Sources in the Parliamentary Affairs ministry said that, despite speculations that the government will adjourn the Session sine die this week, the government does not intend to do so.

“There is a lot of business we want to conduct in the coming days,” a senior official said.

The Opposition has demanded that The National Sports Governance Bill 2025, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha in July and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill 2025 must be sent to a joint committee of Parliament for further scrutiny.

While it looks unlikely that the proceedings will be carried out in the lower house on Monday, the government says that it intends to see the passage of the Bills this Session.

The government is also keen on discussing Space in Parliament, including astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and the achievements of ISRO in this Session.

Government wants to discuss Naxalism and what they have done to prevent it and bring it to the floor of the house.

While the Session is slated to go on till August 21, the coming week will see only two days of business, on August 11 and 12, after which comes a break for Janmashtami and Independence as well as weekend. The Session will then convene on August 18 and go on till August 21.

The remainder of this Session after the break will also be consumed by the political movements around the election of the Vice-President after the exit of Jagdeep Dhankar in the first week.

The nominations for the post, which began on August 7, will go on till August 21. While the ruling-NDA is poised to retain the post, with the BJP keen to field a party face to keep the post close, the Opposition will also field a candidate.
