<p>The 42 containers consisting of 1176 metric tons of NPK Complex fertiliser arrived from Kandla factory in Gujarat to the New Mangalore Port via ship on Friday and the first container unloaded bags with 28 metric tons of fertiliser at Agricultural Co-operative Society in Bajpe. <br /><br />The containers which have landed up in the city will move to different places in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikmagalur districts and distribute the fertiliser bags to 35 co-operative societies.<br /><br />Speaking to media persons following the first unload from the first container, Indian Farmers Fertiliser Co-operative Ltd Mangalore Branch Manager Kripashankar informed that the transportation through containers is more practical as it is the quick and convenient mode of transport.<br /><br /> “Earlier, IFFCO used to distribute fertilisers in the coastal districts through railway mode. However, railway mode was not very handy as there was no adequate railway movement to meet the fertiliser demands of the farmers as and when the need arises. There was non-availability of rail wagons too. Further, there was difficulty in handling fertiliser rakes from the station and man-handling was causing damage to the fertiliser bags. To avoid the inconvenience, IFFCO has started using containers for transportation purpose,” he said.<br /><br />He informed that out of 1,176 metric tons of fertiliser, 1,008 MT will be distributed in Dakshina Kannada, 140 MT in Chikmagalur and rest will be distributed in Udupi district. Each container carries 28 MT of fertiliser. <br /><br />He said that once the trial transportation system is proved successful, then the requirement of the farmers in the region will be met.<br /><br />Squad picks up work<br />Agriculture Department Joint Director Padmaiah Naik who was present during the meet said that the vigilance squad of the Agriculture Department has begun raiding the private fertiliser dealers. The squad raided dealers in Sullia, Nelyadi and Uppinangady on Friday and has issued notice to those who are involved in illegal sale of fertilisers. <br /><br />Within a week, rigorous raids will begin, he informed. He also asked the farmers to complain to the department if they find a dealer selling the fertiliser at higher price than the actual price mentioned in the fertiliser bag.</p>
