As many as 40 silver coins, dating to 1819, and a few gold articles were found by workers digging the ground for constructing a sump at Makanaduku village of the taluk.

The coins have 1819 and Urdu words inscribed on them. The site owner Sharadamma had built a house on the property and was getting the ground dug up for the sump.

The workers found a potful of silver coins and the gold articles. They brought the matter to the notice of Sharadamma, who reported it to the Hosahalli police station.

She handed over the silver coins and the gold articles to the police, tahsildar Javaregowda told reporters. He said of the 40 coins, eight were large in size.

Of the gold articles found, two resemble a bracelet and the other is a jewel in the shape of a ‘kalasa’. The police visited the spot.

Javaregowda said that the unearthed articles would be handed over to the treasury in the town on October 16.

Researchers in history may examine the articles between 10 am and 11 am that day, he said. Similar coins were found at Hoodem village in the past.
