All set for ULB polls in Udupi: DC

The four urban local bodies in Udupi district — Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC), Kundapur Town Municipal Council (TMC), Karkala Town Municipal Council (TMC) and Saligrama Town Panchayat - will go for the polls on August 29.

Speaking to media persons on Friday, Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis said that all measures have been taken for the smooth conduct of the polls.

The DC said the model code of conduct for the election is in place following the announcement of the election date.

The election notification will be issued on August 10.

The last date to file nomination papers is August 17. The last date for withdrawal
of nomination papers is August 20.

The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be held on August 18.

The election will be held on August 29 and The counting of votes will on September 1, she explained.

She said the four urban local bodies in the district have a total of 97 wards. In this, 35 wards are in Udupi CMC, 16 in Saligrama Town Panchayat, 23 in Karkala Town Municipal Council and 23 wards in Kundapur Town Municipal Council.

There are 1,55,336 voters, including 98,500 in Udupi City Municipal Council, 13,201 in Saligrama Town Panchayat, 20,471 in Karkala Town Municipal Council and 23,164 in Kundapur Town Municipal Council jurisdictions.

The DC said that the election to Kaup TMC will not be held as it was constituted recently.

There 99 polling booths in Udupi City Municipal Council, 16 in Saligrama Town Panchayat, 23 in Karkala Town Municipal Council and 23 booths in Kundapur Town Municipal Council.

There are 37 sensitive and 62 normal polling booths in Udupi City Municipal Council, two hypersensitive, 13 sensitive and one normal polling booths in Saligrama Town Panchayat, 23 normal polling booths in Karkala Town Municipal Council and five sensitive and 18 normal in Kundapur Town Municipal Council respectively.

She added that the Media Certification and Media Monitoring Cell will look into the media activities for the violation of poll code of conduct. Pre-certification is required for the telecast of the news concerning the political parties and their promotional ventures.

The first level checking of EVMs have been completed and the VVPATs will not
be used.

As many as 200 each ballot and control units are set up. The poll code of conduct will be in place until September 1.

As many as 161 PROs, 161 APROs, 48 polling officers, 161 group employees are engaged in the polling duties.

The nomination papers will be received at Udupi City Municipal Council, Saligrama Town Panchayat, Mini Vidhana Soudha, Taluk Office (for 1-8 and 17-23 wards, Old Taluk Office building, Karkala (9-16 wards), BEO Office, Kundapur (1-8 wards), Taluk Office, Kundapur (9-16 wards) and Kundapur Town Municipal Council for 17-23 wards, she said.
