21-yr-old graduate held for stealing 325 gm gold from relative’s house

Bengaluru: The Girinagar police arrested a man for allegedly stealing 325 grams of gold jewellery from his relative's house in south Bengaluru, the police said on Tuesday.

The arrested, Pratham, 21, worked at a private company in Chennai. He is a BBA graduate, officers said.

Investigations revealed that the complainant, who had been in Mumbai since January 18, returned home in Banashankari 3rd Stage on February 2 only to find their cupboard locker broken and jewellery missing. A case was then registered by the Girinagar police.

The complainant stated that he left the house under the care of his sister-in-law and nephew, Pratham, before leaving for Mumbai.

The police analysed call records and footage and had a strong suspicion that Pratham was behind the theft due to his history of frequent long travels to Mumbai and other places.

When detained in Chennai on April 28 and grilled by the police, Pratham confessed to stealing the gold. On April 29, he was produced before a Bengaluru court and sent to police custody for 10 days.

During interrogation, the suspect revealed that he sold the gold ornaments in two jewellery shops in Bengaluru's Palace Guttahalli and one in Chennai through a friend.

With notices being served to the jewellery shop owners and Pratham's friend, the police were able to recover 285 grams of gold jewellery worth Rs 24,51,000.

On Tuesday, the suspect was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
