AWAKE’s credit cell, driving programme set new milestones for women

Bengaluru: The Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Karnataka (AWAKE) launched a credit linkage cell in Bengaluru on Thursday, aimed at connecting women entrepreneurs with credit providers. The cell will provide financial literacy, counselling, and workshops to promote sustainable entrepreneurship.

According to Sujatha V from AWAKE, the initiative simplifies access to credit, fostering financial inclusion, and economic growth. The cell comprises chartered accountants, company secretaries, retired bank officers, and banking officials. Weekly counselling sessions will be held every Thursday from 2 pm to 5 pm.

The launch coincided with the valedictory programme of a pilot commercial car driving skill training initiative for women. As part of the programme, funded by the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), 60 women received their commercial driving licences.

AWAKE secretary Jagadeeshwari D spoke on the growing demand for women in the transportation sector.

"Parents prefer women drivers for their children, and solo women travellers seek safer options after incidents of harassment," she said. She noted that women drivers could earn between Rs 18,000 and Rs 90,000 per month, alleviating financial burdens on low-income families while empowering women in a male-dominated sector.

Anitha B Haddannavar, DCP (Traffic, West Division), said having more women in transportation makes the environment safe.

"Women’s intrinsic patience could significantly reduce incidents of drunk and rash driving," she said.

At the event, several women shared their experiences. Swathi, who plans to provide school transport services, said such training builds confidence.

"In a society where women are stereotyped as poor drivers, encouraging and training them as commercial drivers is commendable," she said.

The dual initiatives underline AWAKE’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and empowering women in unconventional sectors.
