<p>Citing the huge cost of constructing pedestrian underpasses, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)has decided not to construct them in future.<br /><br />Lured by the revenue potential running into crores of rupees that can be generated through ads and ground tax by constructing skywalks, the Palike is now preferring to construct them across the City.<br /><br />“There has already been a proposal for 30 to 40 skywalks across the City. We are trying to plan more,” informed a BBMP official.<br /><br />BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah during an inspection on Friday, is learnt to have directed the Zonal Commissioners to identify a few more places requiring skywalks.<br /><br />The day-long inspection saw the Palike Commissioner visit the more congested of places , where civic troubles have been brewing over the past few months. He visited Kadirenahalli underpass that is stuck in a stalemate over land acquisition.<br /><br />Following the BBMP Council decision over providing Rs 3,000 per sq ft instead of the earlier proposal of Rs 1,650 per sqft for 44 to be razed in the vicinity, on Friday Siddaiah approved the added compensation. Thus, the road has been cleared for the underpass to be completed in the next three months. <br /><br />According to BBMP officials, the contractor has stated that the project should be completed by March 31, 2011. The underpass has remained incomplete over the past three years.<br /><br />The Puttenahalli underpass is scheduled to be opened by December 25. Observing poor quality work, the Palike Commissioner has asked the contractor to asphalt the road at the ramp of the underpass.<br /><br />At the Brigade Gateway, the inspection team observed poor maintenance of rain water harvesting system within the gated community and asked the authorities to increase the capacity of retaining rain water.<br /><br />A meeting with the private builders will be convened on Tuesday to discuss more greenery and maintenance of city roads and better facilities for citizens.</p>
