<p>The Bengaluru City University (BCU) was criticised on Wednesday for organising an event to commemorate the centenary of 1924 Belgaum session of Congress, presided by Mahatma Gandhi.</p>.<p>Raising objections over the varsity organising the event at its campus, All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) said that the present Congress government in the state was using public institutions for political campaigning.</p>.<p>AIDSO State Secretary Ajay Kamath said, “Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to Karnataka during Belgaum Congress session was a historic event. But the present state government is utilising this historic event to further its political agenda. Such government-sponsored programmes should not be organised by any university as its official programme.”</p>.Kannada nameboard rule: BBMP asks shops to renew trade licences by Feb 1.<p><strong>Government order</strong></p>.<p>However, Vice-Chancellor Lingaraja Gandhi clarified and said that he was only following the government’s order. “There is an official order from the government and circular from Higher Education department to organise various competitions for students and to celebrate the centenary Congress session presided by Mahatma Gandhi,” the VC added.</p>.<p>Meanwhile, the department of collegiate education issued a latest circular on January 27 asking all affiliated colleges to conduct essay/debate competitions for students to spread Mahatma Gandhi’s preaching. The circular mentioned that it was issued following a note from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.</p>
