<p>Bengaluru reported its first suspected dengue death this year on Monday. Thirteen-year-old Niveditha, a resident of Bommasandra in Anekal, died at St John’s Hospital in the City after her condition worsened due to the flu.<br /><br /></p>.<p>The victim was a Class 8 student at Vishwa Bharathi School in Bommasandra. She was suffering from high fever for the past few days, according to her relatives. <br /><br />They said several other cases of dengue had been reported in Janata Colony where Niveditha resided.<br /><br />According to sources, residents of Byagadadenahalli in Anekal taluk also staged a protest in front of the gram panchayat office demanding that health officials take appropriate measures.<br /><br />As many as 829 cases of dengue have been reported across the State, with 257 cases within the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike limits (BBMP), and 44 positive cases in Bengaluru Urban. <br /><br />Ballari reported 88 cases and Chitradurga 36, besides one death due to the flu.<br /><br />Officials unaware<br /><br />When this newspaper called up the BBMP health department for an official confirmation of Niveditha’s death, the officials were caught unawares. <br />However, they said they were “unsure whether or not the case comes under the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike purview as the girl is from Anekal”. <br /><br />“We are awaiting confirmation from the State Health department in this regard,” said Dr Vatsala, chief medical officer, BBMP.</p>
