Gang breaks into ATM, flees with Rs 30.2 lakh in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru rural police are on the lookout for a gang of four who allegedly made away with Rs 30.2 lakh by breaking into an ATM in Sulibele near Hoskote.

The incident occurred around 3.15 am on Saturday at the State Bank of India (SBI) ATM, Sulibele branch. Four men, wrapped in bedsheets and with their faces covered with a red towel, broke the shutter and entered the ATM kiosk.

C K Baba, superintendent of police (SP), Bengaluru rural, told DH that the suspects sprayed black paint on the CCTV camera inside the ATM kiosk as soon as they entered the facility. “The suspects used a gas cutter to break open the ATM machine. They targeted the exact spot where the money is loaded to minimise their work,” Baba told DH.

“The gang appears to be professional as they knew exactly where to strike and open the ATM machine,” he added.

A police source from Sulibele opined that the gang may have done a recce before striking, considering the way they evaded the police radar. The suspects had arrived in an SUV, according to the police.

While the police have not found CCTV footage showing the suspects’ faces, they have successfully retrieved clips showing glimpses of their movement and the car they used.
