HC seeks report on noise pollution

The High Court of Karnataka on Monday directed the State government to submit a report on the measures taken to control noise pollution in the City.

During the hearing of a public interest litigation on noise pollution in Bangalore, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice D H Waghela and Justice B V Nagarathna sought to know from the government the steps it has taken to curb unauthorised use of loud speakers during festivities.

The Bench observed that indiscriminate honking by motorists, especially in silent zones was leading to noise pollution. It said illegal hoardings and flexes of politicians on road side were distracting motorists.

Amicus curiae B V Vidyulatha submitted that encroachment of footpaths and illegal parking of vehicles too were contributing for noise pollution.

She said motorcyclists were riding on footpaths honking at pedestrians. Noise pollution is also one of the causes for heart attacks according to World Health Organisation, she submitted.

The government counsel too made submission stating that Bangalore was one of the nosiest cities in the country .  The counsel sought two weeks time to make further submissions to the court.
