The next time your vehicle is towed away for parking in a wrong spot, be ready to shell out more money. For, the state government has issued a notification, stating an increase in towing charges.

The revised charges will come into effect from Thursday. Motorists park their vehicles in a haphazard manner in no-parking zones, causing hindrance to smooth vehicular movement. These vehicles are towed away by the city traffic police after levying a fine, which includes the towing charge.

The notification, issued on September 20, states that a maximum of Rs 1,500 will be charged for towing a heavy motor vehicle instead of Rs 500. Similarly, the towing and no-parking charges for two-wheelers are increased from Rs 100 to Rs 650.

A steep increase in the rental of private towing vehicles hired by the police is one of the reasons for an increase in towing charges, the notification said.

The previous revision was made on June 19, 2008.  Hailing the move, a senior police officer said, “It is a good move as we can hire more private towing vehicles and curb illegal parking. The amount also includes the no-parking fee.”
