A medical emergency involving an infant forced the diversion of a Bengaluru-Patna IndiGo flight to Hyderabad on Tuesday morning.

The infant was pronounced dead at a Hyderabad hospital a few hours later.

The infant developed medical complications soon after the IndiGo flight 6E-897 had taken off from the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) here. The crew alerted the pilot, who contacted the Hyderabad airport.

An IndiGo spokesperson said the flight crew requested for an ambulance and a local doctor before the flight landed.

While onboard, the crew was able to find a doctor, who readily attended to the ailing infant.

After landing, the infant was immediately rushed to the hospital, accompanied by an IndiGo staff
member.

“Unfortunately, the infant died and thoughts of all of us at IndiGo are with the parents and family. We pass on our deepest condolences,” an IndiGo statement said.

A few days earlier, another IndiGo flight on the Kolkata-Lucknow route was diverted to Varanasi when a flock of birds was spotted on the destination runway.

The flight had around 150 passengers on board.

Early this month, medical emergency had forced another diversion. A passenger suffered a cardiac arrest on board a flight from Delhi. The aircraft was diverted to
Indore.
