No water supply in over half of Bengaluru from September 15-17

Bengaluru: In a move that could affect more than a half of city residents, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has announced that there will be no supply of Cauvery water for three days from September 15.

This is perhaps the first time in the recent past that the disruption will stretch for three days. 

In a press note, BWSSB Chairman V Ram Prasath Manohar said various pumping stations of the Cauvery Water Supply Project would remain shut on September 15, 16 and 17 for scheduled emergency maintenance. "This will lead to disruption in supply across many areas of the city," he said. 

"These works are being carried out to ensure smooth functioning and long-term efficiency of the Cauvery pumping stations and major pipelines, so that uninterrupted drinking water can be supplied to Greater Bengaluru," the note said. 

As per the press note, the Cauvery Stage V pumping station will remain shut for three days while the pumping stations of Cauvery Stage I, II, III, IV (Phase 1 and 2) will remain shut for 24 hours from 6 am of September 16. 

The impact is expected to be severe in the city's core area given that residents either do not have borewells or they are dry. The city's outskirts are unlikely to be affected as a large part is yet to get a BWSSB connection and depend on private water tankers.
