<p>Bengaluru: Dr Thomas Chandy, a well-known orthopedic surgeon and Chief Managing Director of Hosmat Hospital, passed away at the age of 74 due to Interstitial lung disease.</p>.<p>Dr Chandy breathed his last on Monday at 11.20 pm after receiving a lung transplant at Manipal Hospital on HAL Road.</p>.<p>Dr Chandy was not only a pioneer of orthopedics in Bengaluru but also an avid musician and had a keen interest in farming. </p>.<p>After his MBBS in St John’s Medical College in 1973, Dr Chandy went on to pursue Orthopaedics in St John’s and St Martha’s Hospital and moved to the United States in 1980 for his higher studies in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Jewish Hospital and Medical Centre, Brooklyn, New York. </p>.Bengalureans remember 'doctor by day, jazzman at night'.<p><strong>Hosmat hospital</strong></p>.<p>Upon his return to India, Dr Chandy played an instrumental role in the establishment of Hosmat Hospital in Bengaluru in the 1990s. </p>.<p class="bodytext">He made efforts to obtain land for the hospital in 1987 and the construction was completed in 1992.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Hosmat was one of the first specialty hospitals in Bengaluru, with treatments for orthopedics, neurosciences, sports medicine and accident care. </p>.<p class="bodytext">Born in Bengaluru, Dr Chandy was the son of Kora Chandy, advocate and legal advisor to the British Residency.</p>
