Roadside parking in Bengaluru is set to get costlier in the coming days as the Urban Development Department has finally approved the Parking Policy 2.0 prepared by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT).

The policy drafted over two years ago has undergone many changes before getting approval from the Department. The latest version of the policy, therefore, speaks of providing permits for on-street parking in residential areas. However, those parking on main roads will have to shell out a heavy fee with violations attracting hefty penalties.

The new policy suggests the BBMP to come up with zonal parking rules based on the plan, shift the on-street parking from free to paid regime, provide parking space under private partnership instead of public investment, building truck terminals at the city outskirts, implement the latest technology to manage parking among others.

The policy also goes into the details of road occupancy, including by school vans stopping in a place for more than the prescribed time. It also lays out a road map for strict implementation of the rules.

Officials said the policy is aimed at discouraging the use of private vehicles and encouraging public transport.
