Sankey lake walkers make plaint against Palike

Last Updated 26 January 2015, 20:09 IST

Walkers at the Sankey lake have filed a complaint with the Upa Lokayukta against the BBMP officials for failing to reopen the western side tank bund gate of the park. The gate was closed for reconstruction of the retaining wall and other civil works around two years ago.

The complaint states the western tank bund portion of the lake was closed for the work about a year ago. For about a few months construction activities were going on. However, for the last nine months the work has been totally abandoned.

“After the workers stopped coming to the site, the gate which was closed has been left unattended. The electricity was disconnected in view of the work and the stretch is dark since street light is also turned off,” the complaint says, adding that there had been several instances of suicide at the spot.

‘No display boards’
“There is no display board on the nature of civil work that was proposed and no information either about the contractor or the contract period or the funds.  The BBMP has neither taken any steps for immediate completion of the work, nor preventing public from using western tank bund of the lake,” the complaint said.

Upa Lokayukta Justice Subhash B Adi has directed the BBMP Joint Commissioner (West) and Chief Engineer for Lake Development to submit a report in this regard.
