The Karnataka Animal Rights Activists (KARA) has said that the culling of stray dogs should be stopped at once and efforts should be done to prevent cruelty against the canine population by educating people.

Speaking to reporters, Justice M F Saldanha, former judge of Karnataka High Court and a member of KARA said that there were several instances of dogs being killed or abandoned near the forest areas to get rid of them and called for the sensitisation of citizens.

Mentioning various legal provisions to protect animals, Justice Saldanha said that there was a need to educate people in this regard.

The members also mentioned several incidents reported in the media as dog bite cases  were just sensationalised by the media after they were misled by persons with vested interests. The members have also demanded that a State-level animal welfare board should be constituted.
