Jayanagar, with its bicycle-friendly streets, is well suited for promoting the use of bicycles, according to a study commissioned by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) in 2010.

The study conducted by Gubbi Labs Private Limited (GLPL) identified critical intersections, locations for signage and parking facility.

The three-phase study should have covered Jayanagar, Basavanagudi, JP Nagar, BTM Layout and Madiwala lake cycle project. However, the study did not proceed beyond Jayanagar and the report too has been dumped in cold storage for the past four years. The only progress made till now is marking of cyclist lane on the main roads.

H S Sudhira, a former researcher at Indian Institute of Science and now with GLPL, said that Jayanagar,  interspersed with parks, playgrounds, residential areas, roads with tree shade was ideal for cyclists.

However, DULT Commissioner V Manjula claimed that the project to promote cycling had been implemented on the basis of the report.
