With the exam results coming out one after another, competition is out in the open. Years ago, 65 per cent in arts was considered a big score. But today, even students with 95 per cent at times do not get into the college of their choice.

The question of ‘how much is good enough’ is a very difficult one to answer. Metrolife speaks to a few youngsters about this high level of competition existing in today’s world.
Lalitha Murthy, a counsellor, says, “There is an excessive stress on achievement today. It starts with peer pressure in kids. There is a longing to be accepted and living up to someone else’s expectations.”

Everybody need not become a doctor, engineer or lawyer but whatever you become, you have to excel in that.

For a single child, there is unspoken pressure from the family.

For children who have elder siblings, there is pressure to match upto them.

For those with younger siblings, there is the responsibility of setting an example.

The pressure never ends in today’s world of over-achievers. If you are systematic from the start the stress can’t get to you.

Sahitya, a student of Christ University, says, “Expectations from the society about one’s achievement can sometimes ruin the whole concept of success.”

Devi Ravi, a first-year student of commerce at St Joseph’s College of Commerce, says, “Now, everything has become so competitive. For instance, earlier if you passed chartered accountancy, it was considered to be a huge achievement. But now, you need to get a rank along with another degree or qualification. Plus everyone wants to work in big accounting firms.”

Gaana Srinivas, a student of communication studies, recalls what it was like writing the CET, Comed-K and other entrance exams in 2011.

“Twelfth grade was the worst for me. I experienced hair loss and had bad eating habits because of all the stress and anger management issues. But I diverted my attention to other things.”

Now, in college, she finds herself relatively stress-free. On the other hand, she’s fully aware that until she gets the job of her choice, the stress will remain.

The freedom to pursue any profession or live the life you want comes with disadvantages as well.

When you choose something different, you need to make a name for yourself.

The exposure to any realm has increased tenfold over the last fifteen years.  But the old advice of believing in yourself always helps in countering fear.

And whatever happens in the end, you know you have tried your best.
