Tension prevailed at Kotur in Dharwad taluk following the murder of a BJP functionary on Tuesday night.
Praveen Kammar (36), vice-president of Kotur Gram Panchayat and leader of BJP Yuva Morcha, was stabbed to death by a group of youths at the village at around 10:30 pm on Tuesday. Praveen was shifted to the district civil hospital and later to SDM Medical College hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.
The village was celebrating the Udachamma Devi fair and two groups got into a fight when the prasadam was being distributed. It is said that Praveen intervened and separated the groups. But within minutes, one group attacked Praveen. They hit him on the face and then stabbed him on the neck and abdomen.
Based on a complaint filed by Praveen’s wife, the Garag Police have registered a case and detained seven youths. It is not clear whether the murder was politically motivated.
Union Minister Prahlad Joshi, Dharwad Rural MLA Amrut Desai and others visited the SDM Hospital.
Police said the investigation is on. The body of Praveen was handed over to the family after post-mortem.
