Convict pays with life in escape attempt

An man convicted in a rape case and attempted to escape from police by jumping from the first floor of the court building, died of injuries in Chitradurga on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Sunil (35) of Hireguntanur in Chitradurga taluk. Another undertrial, Veerabhadra, sustained grievous injuries in a similar effort.

The town police had brought Sunil and Veerabhadra to the court hall of second additional district and sessions judge on Wednesday. A total of six persons including these two were convicted by the court in a rape case.

The court, which pronounced the sentence by around 12.30 pm, sentenced Sunil and Veerabhadra to 10-year jail. Police said that both attempted to flee in order to escape the jail term. The police have registered a case.
