<p> Human Rights was the result of a long drawn struggle against tyranny, oppression and injustice, said Principal District and Sessions Judge Prabhavathi M Hiremat. <br /><br /></p>.<p>She was speaking at the World Human Rights Day programme organised by the State Human Rights Commission, District Legal Services Authority and the district administration in Chikkamagaluru on Saturday. <br /><br />Hiremat said that on December 10, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Basavanna had propagated equality way back in 12th century itself. The Legislature, Executive and Judiciary have a vital role in protecting human rights. According to the Supreme Court, along with food, clothes and housing, an individual should have political, social, economic and cultural equality, said the judge.<br /><br />Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission Alok Kumar said that human rights include a pollution-free environment to the citizens. All individuals, government officials and police personnel should have knowledge of human rights, he added.<br /><br />Violation of rights<br /><br />Deputy Commissioner G Satyavathi said that there has been increase in violation of rights of women. She advised women to be cautious and ensure that their rights are not suppressed. <br /><br />Retired lecturer Thipperudrappa delivered a lecture. <br /><br /><br /></p>
