Last Updated 29 November 2018, 17:50 IST

Former DGP H T Sangliana said Kannada is a beautiful language and Karnataka is a beautiful state.

He was speaking at a Karnataka Rajyotsava programme and ‘Christa Ratna’ and ‘Seva Ratna’ award ceremony organised by Karnataka Christian Rakshana Vedike (KCRV) district unit at Kuvempu Kalamandira in Chikkamagaluru on Thursday.

“Going by the norm that the IAS and IPS officials serving in Karnataka must learn
Kannada, I learnt to converse and also to read and write in Kannada”, Sangliana
said.

Recalling the memories during his tenure as the superintendent of police in the district, Sangliana said he had monitored the law and order situation during the parliamentary by-elections when Indira Gandhi contested from Chikkamagaluru in 1978.

Christian Church Association member K K Varghese said the contribution of Christians to Kannada language has been immense. The first Kannada dictionary was compiled by Rev Ferdinand Kittel and the first Kannada primary school was opened in Mangaluru by Christians, he added.

CPI leader Renukaradhya said dividing society into the lines of caste and religion is not right.

Samuel and Soosamma from Chikkamagaluru, P Antony from N R Pura, Joseph from Beluru, Devaki and Nelson D’Silva from Kadur were felicitated with ‘Christa Ratna’ and ‘Seva Ratna’ awards.

KCRV district president Joseph presided over the programme. Women’s unit president Meena was
present.
