<p>Bengaluru: In yet another purported effort to divert funds available with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Chief Minister <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/siddaramaiah">Siddaramaiah</a> on Thursday directed the university officials to transfer the surplus funds for the basic infrastructure development at the government medical colleges. </p>.<p>During a review meeting of the Department of Medical Education, Siddaramaiah insisted that the RGUHS vice-chancellor (VC) take immediate necessary measures to transfer the funds.</p>.<p>According to sources present in the meeting, the idea was pitched by Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh. </p>.<p>When VC Dr M K Ramesh tried to convey to the chief minister that the funds could not be transferred and it was needed for the university and how they were collected, Siddaramaiah silenced him by asking, “Who is superior? the government or the university?.’’</p>.Siddaramaiah tells finance department to approve recruitment of faculty to government varsities.<p>When Minister for Medical Education Dr Sharan Prakash Patil tried to come to the rescue of the VC, Siddaramaiah did not encourage him, the sources added. </p>.<p>“Of the Rs 1,000-crore corpus fund, we have already been forced to transfer Rs 400 crore for the construction of a medical college and campus at Ramanagara. Now, Rs 600 crore is left with the university,” said an official source from the university.</p>.<p>The sources said this is not the first time the government is doing so. There were such attempts earlier too. </p>.<p>“When BJP was in power, there was a pressure to transfer the entire fund. But the syndicate passed a resolution against the government’s move,” the sources said.</p>.<p>They said the syndicate’s decision is final even now. The authorities will place the government’s proposal before the syndicate and senate.</p>.<p>The corpus fund available with the university has been sourced from the examination and affiliation fees. The state government does not provide financial assistance to the university even to pay staff salaries, they explained. </p>.<p>Speaking about the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (Nimhans), Siddaramaiah instructed the department to initiate necessary measures to appoint a KAS officer for the said institution.</p>.<p>The meeting was informed that of the Rs 4,331 crore earmarked for the year 2024-25, a sum of Rs 3,099 crore has been released and the department has utilised Rs 3,005 crore. The department officials were directed to complete the construction of district hospitals in the Gadag, Koppal, Kodagu districts and Karwar.</p>.<p>Expressing concern over the increase in the number of cancer cases, Siddaramaiah asked the department to study and submit a report and also take measures to provide international-level treatment for the patients.</p>
