Karnataka to borrow power from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab to beat shortage: K J George

Davanagere: Energy Minister K J George on Tuesday stated that demand for electricity has increased by 5 to 10 percent in the summer season and to overcome the power shortage, it has been decided to purchase from Uttar Pradesh and Punjab under the exchange scheme.

"The demand for power was increased by 5 percent in January. This demand is likely to increase further in March and April. The electricity purchased from Uttar Pradesh and Punjab in summer will be returned after June. Several rounds of discussions have been held on this," he said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"All ‘Escoms’ submit proposals every year regarding the increase in electricity rates. KERC listens to public complaints and takes decisions. Last year, electricity rates were not increased. The government’s decision will be announced on the instructions of KERC," he added.

“Last year, even when the state witnessed drought, power supply was interrupted for only one hour. This year, there is no load-shedding in any part of the state. Quality power is being supplied to agricultural pump sets for 7 hours,” he said.

The minister also said that many government departments have outstanding electricity bills to ‘Escom’. "This amount is huge. If the dues are paid by all departments, the amount of loss will be reduced," he added.
