<p>Mangaluru: The Mangaluru city police have been successful in recovering 18.314 kg gold ornaments stolen from Kotekar Vyavasaya Seva Sahakari Sangha Niyamitha branch at KC Road, within a short span of time, and have brought much relief to 1,600 society customers. </p><p>Four masked men had decamped with gold ornaments and cash from the society on January 17 by threatening the bank staff.</p><p>The police have so far arrested four persons and recovered Rs 3,80,500 cash out of Rs 11 lakh cash stolen, two pistols, three live rounds, two machetes, and a Fiat car along with a fake number plate, said Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal. Later on January 23, the team had arrested M Shanmugasundaram (65), father of prime accused Murugandi on the charges of harbouring the accused and recovered 16.285 kg gold.</p><p>Explaining the case, the Commissioner said that the planning to loot the society was conceived six months ago with the accused who met at Taloja jail conspired with the local associate Shashi Thevar who is yet to be arrested. </p><p>Murugandi Thevar and others conducted reconnaissance three times (in August, October and November) to plan entry, exit routes, and logistics. All the accused assembled at Surathkal and headed to the bank where the robbery was conducted.</p><p>After committing the offence, Murugandi Thevar and Yosuva Rajendran escaped to Kerala via Talapady toll gate in the Fiat car and then travelled to Tamil Nadu. As per their plan, all were supposed to meet in Mumbai to share the looted property and dispose of it in Mumbai.</p><p>When the incident took place, the police did not have any clue. However, with the identification of the car's original number plate at Shiroor toll gate, one team left for Mumbai and got some details on Murugandi. Four teams had gone to different locations in Tamil Nadu and kept a track on the movement of the accused before arresting them. </p><p>After initial recovery of two kg of gold, the accused tried to misguide the police. However, with continuous interrogation, the police were successful in recovering 18.3 kg gold and 200 grams of gold is yet to be recovered as the four suspects are still at large. Kannan is booked in a case in Tilak Nagar police station in Mumbai.</p><p><strong>Meeting of banks</strong></p><p>The Commissioner said that the City police will convene a meeting of the cooperative societies and banks to discuss enhancing security measures including deploying security guards round the close, installing CCTV cameras, and alarm button. </p><p>If they do not comply, then the police will write to the competent authorities.</p>
