A woman of Kundapur origin has become the first woman from Karnataka to have driving licence in Saudi Arabia after the gulf country lifted ban on driving of vehicles placed on women in June this year.

Dr Vanishree Santhosh Shetty, a dentist by profession, has passed the driving test and received her licence.

Her husband Santhosh Shetty has his house in Konjady near Albady in Kundapur. Vanishree lives in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia for the past 15 years with her husband and two sons.

Vanishree had a driving licence in India in 2002. She wanted to get a driving licence in Saudi Arabia too as she can drive the vehicle herself while going to work. After she got married to engineer Santhosh and shifted to Saudi Arabia, she did not get a chance to drive there because of the royal decree there against women driving the vehicles. Vanishree is now happy as she has cleared the driving test at Saudi Arabia as it is very tough and a challenge to Indian drivers.
