'Life experiences, shone in works of litterateurs'

The writings of modernists who had great command over both English and Sanskrit had a  lot of meaning and flair. Later, the neo litterateurs were influenced by English and European literature, said litterateur S L Bhyrappa.

He was speaking after releasing works and plays written by D A Shanker titled ‘Kalale Karachuri,’ (historical play), here on Monday at a function ‘D A Shanker, 75,’ to felicitate the author.

“Shanker though is in the midst of modernists did not become one. He grew opposing them. Those who are involved in creating writing do not indulge in criticism. But Shanker is capable of both creative writing and writing critiques,” said Bhyrappa.  
“BMShri, A N Murthy Rao, Shaker Mokashi Punkar, V K Gokak were all English teachers.

The Kannada teachers those days had great knowledge of English. And English and Kannada litterateurs knew Sanskrit. As a result great literature full of meaning came about.

This was because they had unique life experiences and also the understanding of tradition,” he said.

Shanker also had written 23 books, six plays and poems. He has translated English works into Kannada. He also had knowledge of old Kannada and is a person who does not look at anything lightly. In the olden days there were songs in the dramas staged.

Later, there was opposition for such songs in the dramas. But once again the old style is coming back. Shanker though is not an actor, had penned songs for Vamshavriksha. At 75, he has maintained both physical and mental health and he should take up bigger projects and work on it, said Bhyrappa.

Shanker and his wife Prathima Shanker were felicitated on the occasion. MP Adagur H Vishwanath presided.

Suttur seer Sree Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami graced the occasion. Maharani Arts College principal B V Vasanthkumar spoke about the works. Publisher D N Lokappa was present.
