Man dies as water tank collapses

A labourer was killed on the spot and another injured after a water tank built with laterite stones collapsed and fell on them at Papemajalu in Ariyadka village in Puttur taluk on Saturday late night.

The deceased is identified as Ramesh alias Rama (30) and the injured is Madhava.

The water tank was constructed with laterite stones under Ganga Kalyana project in Papemajalu six years ago.

Though the construction on tank was completed long ago, water was not filled until a month ago. When the tank was filled up with water, villagers noticed cracks in the tank. After carrying out repair works, the tank was filled with water on Saturday night.

The tank collapsed and fell on four youth who had gone to check whether the tank was brimming with water. Ramesh alias Rama had breathed his last before he could be retrieved from the rubble. Madhava’s leg and hands were crushed under the boulders.
