<p class="bodytext">An alcoholic husband who stabbed his wife for refusing him money to buy liquor was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment and slapped with a fine of Rs 16,000 by the first additional district and sessions court on Monday.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Ravi (44) of Hassan district, a resident of Permannur near Chembugudde used to pester his wife Rekha for money to buy liquor. Ravi’s drinking habit had cost him his job at a private hospital in Deralakatte. Rekha worked as a homeguard.</p>.<p class="bodytext">On July 7, 2017, night Rekha refused to give Ravi money to drink. This enraged him and he stabbed her in the stomach with a knife.</p>.<p class="bodytext">A profusely bleeding Rekha was shifted to hospital. She survived. A case was registered at the Ullal police station and then sub-inspector Prakash Kumar filed the charge sheet.</p>.<p class="CrossHead">The trial</p>.<p class="bodytext">During the trial as many as 11 witnesses, including the victim’s daughter, mother-in-law and neighbour Yogish who witnessed the stabbing testified against Ravi. As many as 13 documents and three circumstantial pieces of evidence were examined.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The First Additional District and Sessions Judge Sharada B upheld the arguments of Public Prosecutor Raju Poojary Bannady and declared Ravi guilty under section IPC 307 (attempt to murder) and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Ravi will undergo an additional year of imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine of Rs 10,000.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Ravi was sentenced to one year of imprisonment under section 504 (for intentionally insulting), 10 years and Rs 6,000 as a penalty under section 326 (causing grievous hurt), one-year imprisonment under section 506 of IPC.</p>.<p class="bodytext">All sentences will run concurrently the judge declared and directed the District Legal Services Authority to award a suitable compensation to the victim Rekha.</p>
