<p>Amidst walk out staged by the BJP, the Council of Mangalore City Corporation approved the surplus budget of Rs 12.07 lakh for the year 2012-13, here on Friday.<br /><br /></p>.<p>The total budget is of Rs 228.39 crore. The expenditures shown in the budget run upto Rs 228.27 crore making it a surplus budget of Rs 12.07 lakh. <br /><br />Gulzar Banu created history by reading out the budget all by herself when the person chosen by her failed to present the budget. <br /><br />The revenue for the MCC includes Rs 35 crore from water bill, Rs 28.86 crore from property tax, Rs 1.25 crore from trade linceses, Rs 7.20 crore from fee, Rs 3.16 crore from markets and funds from the government and other sources. With the work on new vented dam under progress, the budget has earmarked Rs three crore for 2012-13, for the dam. All efforts would be made to provide 24X7 water supplies to the citizens by disconnecting the illegal connections, she said. A sum of Rs 175 lakh is being earmarked in the budget to take up UGD work. A sum of Rs 15 lakh has been set aside for providing financial assistance to those who were affected by natural disasters. <br /><br />Kuteera Bhagya<br /><br />The budget has decided to extend Kuteera Bhagya Yojana to this year, under which a sum of Rs 15,000 would be given to repair houses of the BPL beneficiaries (barring SC/ST). Under the scheme, each corporator would get 10 houses. Under Kuteera Jyothi scheme, Rs 10,000 would be given to the BPL beneficiaries to get electricity connection. A sum of Rs 93.60 lakh has been earmarked for Kuteera Bhagya and Kuteera Jyothi schemes. <br /><br />‘Awareness on water’<br /><br />To create awareness on water storage, water purification and sewage treatment plants, the budget has proposed a novel scheme. The awareness on saving water will be created among sixth and seventh standard students. A sum of Rs five lakh has been earmarked for this purpose. <br /><br />Devt work<br /><br />A sum of Rs 17.28 crore has been earmarked for development work in the budget. This includes Rs 13 crore for development work, Rs 2.95 crore for SC/ST development, Rs 93.60 lakh for eradication of poverty and bringing in social welfare, Rs 39 lakh for welfare of disabled persons. <br /><br />The budget also proposed to set up multi-level car parking complex at Old bus stand in Hampanakatta. The facility will provide parking space for 600 cars when completed. Measures will be taken to construct bus shelters with the help of donors on BOT basis. <br /><br />Welcome to MCC<br /><br />The budget has proposed to give ‘baby kit’ to the first baby born in BPL families in the MCC limits during 2012-13. The MCC will issue birth certificate to the family free of cost. The kit will say “Welcome to Mangalore City Corporation.” A sum of Rs five lakh has been earmarked for the purpose. </p>
