Rainwater enters low areas in Udupi; people shifted

Heavy rain lashed Udupi district on Saturday. In the last 24 hours, Udupi taluk received 197.6 mm rain, Kundapur taluk — 118.5 mm rain and Karkala — 196.9 mm rain.

Artificial flood has inundated several areas in the district.

The low-lying areas have submerged on both sides of Nittur and Karavali Junction. As rainwater had entered the houses, about 60 to 70 people were shifted to safer areas. Schools and colleges in some remote areas had declared holidays.

Waterlogging of roads inconvenienced both pedestrians and residents. The waterlogging of Madhwaraj Layout in Kodankoor affected the residents. About 70 people were shifted with the help of Malpe fishermen.

Rajangann

Water has entered Rajangann on Sri Krishna Mutt premises. As a result, several vehicles were inundated. Over 100 houses near Vidyodaya School, Matadabettu, Badagubettu and Bannanje experienced artificial floods.

Rivers Seetha, Swarna, Varahi and Sauparnika are in spate.

MLA Raghupathy Bhat rushed to the flood-affected areas in Nittur and helped in the rescue operation. A gruel centre has been opened at Beedanagudde, said the MLA.

Water on highway

The stretch extending at the Kalsanka bridge near the under-construction national highway in Padubidri was blocked for nearly two hours as the rainwater submerged the low-lying areas, thus flooding the road. All the vehicles from Mangaluru to Udupi were diverted to the route via Belmannu.

River water entered farmland in Kodangala. Also, a huge tree fell on a bridge at Kodangala and disrupted traffic for some time.

Water has entered over 100-acre farmlands in Puthige, Pernankila, Parika, Bhairampalli, Bellarpady, Hirebettu, Balkatta areas. Artificial flood in Alevoor affected the vehicle users. Water entered a few shops as well.

In Karkala taluk, areas like Inna and Sooda are flooded. The Revenue Department officials immediately rushed to the spot to ensure safety measures.

Houses damaged

In Udupi district, a house belonging to Shekhar Poojary in Udyavara was completely damaged. The loss is estimated to be around Rs two lakh. A house in Kodasarabettu was damaged due to the heavy gusty wind and the loss is estimated to be around Rs 40000. A house belonging to Janaki Belchada in Muduthonse was damaged after the walls fell owing to heavy rain. The loss is Rs 35,000.

In Kundapur taluk, three houses were damaged in Kasaba village. The houses belonging to Puroshattham Naik, Harsha Kharvi and Panduranga Kharvi was damaged severely. The losses are estimated to be around Rs 40,000 each. In Woderhobli, a house belonging to Bacchi Poojary was damaged and the loss is Rs 50,000.
