An elderly couple committed suicide at their residence in Kotekar Beeri in the jurisdiction of Ullal police station on Tuesday.
According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Devaraj (70) and his wife Vasanthi (58).
The incident came to light when Venkappa, their milk vendor, knocked on the door of the house to supply milk. The couple, hailing from Manjeshwara, were residing at Kotekar Beeri for the past 20 years.
The couple had no children and were under depression. Devaraj had retired as a driver of Mangaluru All India Radio. The couple had reared dogs like their own children. On Tuesday, the dogs were seen silently mourning the loss of their owners.
In a death note, the couple had handed over their house and land to their niece Shwetha (daughter of Devaraj’s brother). They have also requested the niece to take care of the dogs.
