Assembly Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar has issued a notice to Congress’ Chincholi Umesh G Jadhav seeking ‘clarification’ on his resignation, sources said. Jadhav, who submitted his resignation Monday, has been asked to appear before Kumar within seven days, sources in the Assembly secretariat said.

A rebel Congress legislator, Jadhav formally joined the BJP on Wednesday and is tipped to become the saffron party’s candidate in Gulbarga to take on veteran Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge. Jadhav is also facing the prospect of disqualification. He is one of the four rebel legislators - Ramesh Jarkiholi, B Nagendra and Mahesh Kumathalli being the others - against whom Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Siddaramaiah has moved a petition seeking their disqualification under the anti-defection law for anti-party activities.
