‘Suvarna Thribhuja’ tubs recovered

Deputy Commissioner S S Nakul said on Saturday said that tubs from the boat ‘Suvarna Thribhuja’ that went missing on December 16 have been recovered at Malvan port in Maharastra.

He spoke after chairing a meeting with rescue teams and leaders of the fishermen.

“We are making continuous efforts to trace the missing fishermen. We are taking the help of ISRO and other satellites. About 100 ships and helicopters are being used for the operation. Coast Guard, Indian Navy and the police are involved in the search operation,” he said.

Fisheries Minister Venkat Rao Nadagouda recently had announced that a compensation of Rs 1 would be given to the fishermen’s family. The cheques would be handed over on Tuesday, the DC added.

Nakul said that boats employing fishermen of other countries would be seized. Legal action will be initiated against those operating such boats. It is mandatory for the fishermen to have identity cards.

He said that details of the daily fishing activity should be recorded. The boat last made contact with six other boats in Udupi near the coast of Goa, on the morning of December 16 around 1 am.

Chandrashekar, the boat owner and six other fishermen – Damodar (40) from Malpe, Lakshman (45), Sathish (35), Ravi (27), Harish (28), and Ramesh (30) from Bhatkal were on the board.
