An incident of mass copying in the ongoing SSLC examination has been reported from Bagalkot district, with teachers brought into the examination centres to help students. This was to ensure that students got pass marks and in turn help the district figure in the top 10 in terms of pass percentage.

The offenders had also switched off CCTV cameras at the examination centres to ensure there was no evidence of the malpractice. “For maths and English subjects, the respective teachers were deputed at the centres. They were inside the centres for a prolonged period. This was upon instructions from senior officials in the district. They claimed that they were helping students get pass marks,” a teacher deputed to the examination centre in Badami said.

Invigilators threatened

At an examination centre at Kategeri, the father of a candidate threatened and abused an invigilator for preventing his son from copying.

The parents of a few students also barged into the centre and threatened the woman invigilator for preventing their children from copying.

They were said to have been tipped off by those involved in the offences.

Money from students

According to a school official in Hungund, senior officials took Rs 100–1,000 from each student to help them copy during the examination. The official said that students from a private institution coughed up Rs 30,000 to provide some comforts inside the examination hall and to bribe checking squads and officials.

However, when DH contacted V Sumangala, director, SSLC Board, she said she has not received any such complaints. “There is a lot of fake news doing the rounds. It is unlikely such an incident happened with so much media glare. However, we will contact the officials concerned in the district and seek a report,” she told DH.
