Unrelenting rain hits normal life in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi

Heavy overnight rain has hit normal life in Dakshina Kannada district, causing damage to houses and disrupting traffic. Uallal taluk bore the maximum brunt where four lives, including three of a family, in the landslip-triggered wall collapse.

. After a break on Thursday, skies opened up in the night. Heavy rains pummeled many parts of the district, including Mangaluru city, on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

The overnight rains flooded houses in Ullal taluk and the low-lying areas in Mangaluru, including the housing complex of labourers on Mission Street Road. The traffic on Bejai-Kapikad road was hit after a massive tree came crashing on the road. The rail service was affected for a while after a tree fell on the railway track near Jeppu.

. Two fishermen went missing from Phalguni river near Alivebagilu. Yeshwant Karkera (52) and Ram Kotyan (47) of Thota Bengre had ventured into the river for fish catch on Wednesday night. The family members have lodged a missing complaint with Panambur police.

. Dry fish stock stored at a godown in Bandar (harbour) was damaged due to flooding of the godown. The rail underbridges at Jeppu and Padil were inundated with rainwater.

. Most of the rivers, including Netravathi and Phalguni, are flowing above danger mark, posing serious threat of flooding the villages on their banks.

. Kotekar and Talpady in Ullal taluk have recorded a whopping 312.5 mm and 288 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. Mangaluru city registered 260 mm of rain while Mulki witnessed 190 mm.

. The situation is no different in Udupi and the coastal areas of Uttara Kannada. Minor landslides have hit traffic and sea erosion is posing a grave threat to residents living in close proximity. Udupi town experienced 190 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.

. The weather department has forecast heavy rain in many parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. A red alert has been sounded in both the districts till Sunday (June 01) The district administration has declared holiday for schools and colleges in view of heavy rain forecast by the IMD. The weatherman has also cautioned the fishermen against venturing into the rough sea.

. The famed Madhura Madhanantheswara Vinayaka Temple in neighbouring Kasargod has been completely flooded.

. Meanwhile, the intensity of rain has come down in Malnad districts, including Kodagu. But the hilly districts of Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru are shivering under wet and chilly weather.

. Kodagu district is experiencing heavy rains in the night and intermittent spells of light showers in the day for the past few days.

. Most of the reservoirs in the state have been clocking good inflows, courtesy incessant rain in their catchment areas. Many parts of north and south interior Karnataka also experienced moderate to heavy rains intermittently on Friday.
